Overview

If improperly configured, Lumin can shed the circuit that powers the home's internet router. This results in loss of internet service and WiFi broadcast to the home as well as an inability for the user to communicate with the Lumin Smart Panel (LSP) via the Lumin Smart app. Power must be restored to the router in order to correct this situation. There are three methods by which this can be done:

  • Method 1: Establish temporary power to the router
  • Method 2: Access Lumin's WiFi network
  • Method 3: Reset all Lumin-controlled circuits


Method 1: Establish Temporary Power to Router

This issue is caused by Lumin automatically disabling circuits, including the router circuit, in order to reduce power and energy consumption in an outage.


If this situation occurs:

1. Identify another electrical receptacle in the home that has power.

2. Run a temporary extension cord from the powered outlet to the router.
  • Once the router is powered by the extension cord, the internet should be able to be accessed (if internet connection is present in the power outage).

3. Use the Lumin Smart app to access the LSP.

4. Enable the circuit tile that includes the WiFi router by sliding the Power Plug icon to the right after connecting to the panel.

After this process is complete, the extension cable can be removed and the router can be plugged into the original receptacle. Follow the directions at the end of this article to ensure that the router is not shed again in the future.


Method 2: Access Lumin's WiFi Network

1. Ensure the Lumin Smart Panel is in WiFi/Setup Mode.
  • This is indicated by external green and blue lights flashing in unison. If the lights are in any other state, press and release the WiFi button once to enter WiFi/Setup Mode.
2. On a mobile device that has the Lumin Smart app installed, access the WiFi settings and connect to the Lumin Wifi network.
  • This network will be recognizable by a name format of "Lumin-XXXXXXXXXXXX".
3. Log out and back in to the Lumin Smart app.

4. While still connected to the Lumin WiFi network, use the Lumin Smart app to enable the circuit tile that includes the WiFi router by sliding the Power Plug icon to the right.

5. Log out of the Lumin Smart app.

6. Reconnect to the home's WiFi Network with the mobile device.

7. Log in to the Lumin Smart app.


All Lumin-controlled circuits should now be user-controllable using the app. Note that if the grid power and internet connection to the home are both down, Lumin can only be accessed locally while the mobile device is within range of the home's WiFi router. 


Method 3: Reset All Lumin-Controlled Circuits

If the preceding two methods cannot be used, the user can reset all Lumin-controlled circuits so that they are all enabled. There are two disadvantages to this method: it will allow all Lumin-controlled loads to operate, potentially depleting the battery or tripping the inverter, and the LSP must remain off for the duration of the power outage. Because of these drawbacks, this method should only be used as a last resort.

  1. Locate the Power rocker switch on the side of the LSP.
    • This switch is marked with an I (power on) and an O (power off).
  2. Press the O (off).
  3. Press the I (on).
  4. Press the O (off). 


This off-on-off cycle will turn off the LSP but leave all of its controlled circuits enabled. When grid power is restored, turn the LSP back on by pressing the I (on).


Follow the steps at the end of this article to ensure that the router is not shed again in the future. 


Prevent Future Router Shedding

As a general practice, circuits that power routers should always be backed up by the home's battery so they will function in an outage but should never be controlled by Lumin. There is generally no need to control this circuit with Lumin as it is typically a 15- or 20-amp receptacle circuit that represents only a small fraction of the home's electrical consumption. Shedding this circuit will make little difference in the runtime of the battery.


If the router circuit has already been wired through the LSP and rewiring is not desirable, steps can be taken to ensure that this circuit is not shed during an outage. The procedure is as follows:

  1. Navigate to the Smart Controls tab at the bottom of the Lumin Smart app.
  2. Identify whether the system has Off-Grid Mode or Smart Power Mode.
    • If equipped with Off-Grid Mode:
      1. Set the router circuit to Protected using the slider to the right of the circuit name.
    • If equipped with Smart Power Mode:
      1. Use the Drag and Drop icon located left of the circuit name to move it to the Essential category.
