Many modern smartphones include a system feature that automatically disconnects from a WiFi network when no internet connection is detected. While this behavior can be helpful in everyday use, it may prevent your device from staying connected to your home network during an Internet Service Provider (ISP) outage. Lumin uses your home's WiFi network to communicate with your mobile device even when there is no internet connection, so it's important to understand how to maintain this connection when both grid power and internet are lost.
Instead of allowing the automatic switching to cellular data that is often enabled by default on mobile devices, Lumin users can follow the steps below to ensure their devices still connect to the WiFi network.
Note that when the internet is not available and these settings are implemented, you will only be able to communicate with your Lumin Smart Panel and will not be able to transmit or receive data from the internet. For this reason, we recommend only implementing these steps when you are experiencing an outage of both grid power and internet and we recommend that you revert to default WiFi settings when the internet outage is over, as the settings described below can negatively affect the usability of your device in typical environments where the WiFi signal may be weaker than a cellular signal.
During internet outages, only keep WiFi enabled when you need to communicate with your Lumin Smart Panel. Disable your device's WiFi connection when you need to navigate the internet.
Follow the steps below for your device type:
iOS (iPhone / iPad)
WiFi Assist can cause the device to switch to cellular data when the WiFi connection is weak or offline. Turning it off helps ensure the device stays connected to your home network.
Disable Wi-Fi Assist:
- Open Settings
- Tap Cellular
- Scroll to the bottom
- Turn off Wi-Fi Assist
Optional: Improve WiFi Stability:
- Open Settings → Wi-Fi
- Tap the ⓘnext to your home network
- Make sure Auto-Join is enabled
- Ensure Private Wi-Fi Address is enabled (helps stability on some routers)
